Kate DiCamillo's New York Times best-selling Mercy Watson series

Don't miss the Deckawoo Drive series starring favorite characters from the Mercy Watson titles

'DiCamillo effortlessly slips back into the comfortable rhythms of Mercy’s world, infusing every chapter with subdued wit, warmth, and heart. Van Dusen matches the text stride-for-stride, delivering caricatured spot art and full-page scenes of the Pinocchioesque Leroy and the four-toothed, spaghetti-loving Maybelline, who Leroy comes to consider "the most splendiferous horse in all of creation.'

—Publishers Weekly (starred review).

'Like Leroy Ninker Saddles Up, it’s a witty yet tender reminder of the importance of being one’s best self. You do you, Francine.'

—Publishers Weekly.

'This story is certain to resonate with anyone who has ever felt overpowered by authority. To her credit, DiCamillo explores the Lincolns’ complicated relationship without completely dumping on Eugenia. Yes, Eugenia is overbearing, but the sisters do love each other. Stella’s parallel struggles (as Frank’s younger sister) help to move the plot forward and demonstrate other acceptable ways of gaining agency. As always, Van Dusen’s signature artwork is pleasing to the eye and will help emerging readers make sense of the story’s nuances and quirkiness. This Deckawoo Drive adventure is sure to inspire anyone taking his or her own tentative steps toward independence.'

—Booklist (starred review).

'As in the earlier books, believable (if eccentric) personalities, sophisticated vocabulary, and polished prose make this an inviting title for emerging chapter- book readers. Fans of this series and the earlier Mercy Watson books will be amazed by Eugenia’s partial redemption and delight that the results are merely temporary.'

Of the 340 reviews at the time of this writing about half or dozen or so panned the book, one because her kid now wants to eat toast with butter, Mercy Watson''s favorite. Well, let me really scare the bejeebers out of those people who can find fault with anything. Here''s a fact. Everyone who eats toast will eventually die. There! Another reviewer was unhappy because no life lessons were learned from reading the books. Well, here''s a life''s lesson. Let''s just have some fun, and that is exactly what Mercy Watson books provide.

My boys (6&8) could just read picture books forever. But they need to start following a longer story. We tried boxcar kids and magic treehouse. Boxcar kids was too slow moving, but I know they will like them eventually. They do like magic tree house books because they learned interesting things. But sometimes they would want to skip a night because they still want the easy funny book. Well mercy Watson is it. You can finish one in one night or split it over 2 or 3 nights if you ready multp books each night. They easily remember where the story left off and laugh at the crazy adventures. So this is a great intro to chapter books.

My husband and I are both teachers, and this is a great and well known author! We are doing read alouds with our son (almost 5) and I saw this on several lists as recommended.

....I just don’t get it. This series is...weird. The idea is cute with the pig eating toast, but it doesn’t really get very interesting. The pig gets into weird situations and they call the police or fire dept....think Curious George bht far less curious and cute. Although it is presented in a light/slapstick way, the plot lines are either boring or inappropriate— I.e. a bed falling through the ceiling or a man robbing their house...not really what a young kid needs to see and worry about.

The illustrations are unique and some are cute, but the way they portray the older women next door is flat out disturbing and creepy. This illustrator is talented but this was the wrong illustrator for the series and just turned me off more and more as a teacher and parent.

We started the series and our son is kind of interested in the pig, so we are trying to stay positive and finish what we started...but we absolutely adjust what is read and illustrations shown (I would have nightmares about those Lincoln sisters- those drawings are creepy...). Someone was trying to be unusual and different here for the sole purpose of being different and unusual. While I recommend this author’s other works wholeheartedly, this is a series I plan to donate and not save for my younger daughter. It was a huge disappointment, and I just don’t understand what one could sincerely like about it.

If you want a cute read aloud, try the Very Far Far North book and its sequel. Straightforward, child friendly illustrations, and just a NICE story that has actual thought behind it. Skip Mercy Watson- your time is best spent elsewhere.

I got my 6yr old and 4yr old this set for Christmas, and we''ve finished 4 of the 6 books! It only takes me about 20 minutes to get through one of the books from start to finish, and my kids love them. The illustrations are amazing and in vivid color, and the stories are a little simple but cute. In every story, Mercy is single-mindedly following her nose and her stomach (she''s a huge fan of buttered toast) and somehow ends up saving the day each time and being lauded as a hero. This tickles my kids and we talk about how she is only motivated by food but somehow ends up rescuing her parents, detaining the bad guy, etc. They''re cute stories, and a good introduction to chapter books for my young ones.

I have bought three sets of these books. I first purchased them for my older son four years ago. We read these books nightly and we still use quotes from the Mercy Watson books. I have since purchased this set for a birthday present and now again for a Christmas present. This set is my go-to present for anyone around 4-5 years old. The books are short "chapter books" but are typically too long for anyone under 4. My two year old (who can sit through several Curious George books in a row) can listen to about half of one these books without a problem.

The stories are cute but really the illustrations make these books. I am a huge fan of Chris van Dusen and his pictures in these books do not disappoint. The expressions this little pig gets when she is causing mischief, often unbeknownst to her, are priceless and they make me laugh out loud. My favorite book in the series is probably the first one, Mercy Watson to the Rescue. You get introduced to the three main characters, Mercy, Mr. and Mrs. Watson and also their neighbors, Eugenia (you have to love someone with that name) and Baby.

All in all, you will be happy with these books. The stories are engaging and include a lot of hot buttered toast and the artwork is both endearing and hilarious. I love this series, can you tell? :) Happy reading!!

Especially boys who need a lot of action and comedy to keep their interest. The Mercy Watson series does not disappoint! He has re-read these books over and over since we gave them to him for Christmas. Every day I have found him at some point tucked into his reading nook cackling about the antics of this silly pig!
